Spiritual Direction
For I long to see you, that I may share with you some spiritual gift so that you may be
strengthened, that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by one another's faith,
yours and mine. - Romans 1: 11-12

One of the time-honored pieces of our Catholic tradition is to journey through life with a spiritual partner. These spiritual partnerships can take different forms, meeting anywhere from weekly to monthly, with religious or lay people, with mentors for guidance or peers for mutual support and accountability. In any case, the idea is to avoid trying to 'fly solo' in your spiritual life, but to share your joys, struggles and hopes with someone else who can really encourage you and help you connect to Christ in the patterns of everyday life. Contrary to what many may think upon hearing the term 'Spiritual direction,' the goal is not for someone else to tell you what to do or try to interpret what God is saying to you. Your spiritual director cannot speak for God, but rather helps you focus on God and discern for yourself how the Lord is whispering in your heart.
